While living through the pandemic I've been confronted by a feeling of vulnerability beyond anything I could imagine. This has encouraged me to analyse situations from every angle. I've used organic subjects (the wilting root crop and a flower in bloom) to balance those feelings of vulnerability with the joy brought by life, which offers hope and optimism worth cherishing. This piece called Life visually explores the natural connection between new and old, life and death, optimism and despair. The youthful gaze upward of the colourful and optimistic flower is in contrast with the forlorn and resigned expression of the downward facing root.
This piece was a finalist at the 2021 WhiteWall Art Prize ‘Into the Light” Competition.
Painted on a 190 gsm watercolour paper (with paper warps on the actual artwork).
