“The Visitor” took over 30 hours of sketching. I have used archival ink pens and professional inks, in a limited palette for this piece. The paper used is Arches France hot pressed in white.
My inspiration for this piece was the typical Australian backyard of years gone by and the inevitable magpie visitor.
In honour of my mother, who always seems to have magpies follow her, I based the magpie on a photo I took of her most recent stalking magpie.
For me the scene brings back fond memories of rope clothes lines and mothers who wore aprons to do the daily chores.
For some, the work may depict a bygone era of misogynistic gendered roles. However, for me, it invokes warm nostalgic feelings from my childhood.
