Artwork Description

Made in Jingdezhen, China in 2019 with Jingdezhen fine white porcelain clay during a six-week residency at the Pottery Workshop. Dragonfruit was prominent around the local shops in Jingdezhen at the time of my visit, its vibrant pink skin making its exotic form an instant beacon. Its beautiful white flesh and black seeds lie in contrast. Grown on a climbing cactus likened to something out of Dr Seuss, one has to have some fun and mix it up.

Artist Bio

Kylie Nichols is a Sculptor and Installation artist. Nichols' art practice explores everyday objects, both natural and manufactured, drawing on science and the human condition.

In Nichols latest ceramic works, she pares back the colours of the object to soften the focus. Playing with the perceptual construct is an attempt to influence the way the viewer perceives the object.

Fascinated by the dichotomy of liquid to solid states, casting and mould making are often employed. Material investigation and process are both crucial components in the development of her work.

Nichols has a Bachelor of Visual Arts and Design and was a residency recipient at the Pottery Workshop in Jingdezhen, China (Helpmann Academy) in 2019. Shortlisted Unley Art Prize 2021. Based in Adelaide, South Australia, her work is held in numerous private collections.
