Artwork Description

This acrylic painting, created on a vintage chalkboard found in a secondhand store, presents a serene yet vibrant scene of modern life—a stylish home by a tranquil pool. A brightly colored pool umbrella stands prominently, offering shade in this sun-drenched oasis, while a peacock casually meanders near the water’s edge, adding an unexpected touch of elegance and whimsy.

Drawing inspiration from the works of David Hockney and Paul Gauguin, the piece blends the bold use of color and geometric lines seen in Hockney’s landscapes with the tropical, almost dreamlike quality of Gauguin’s depictions of paradise. The juxtaposition of modern architecture and the free-flowing beauty of nature creates a timeless narrative of relaxation, tranquility, and the pleasure of the simple things in life.

The choice of medium—acrylic on chalkboard—adds a unique texture and depth, with the surface’s matte finish amplifying the vibrant hues of the painting. The chalkboard’s aged patina subtly contrasts with the brightness of the pool scene, evoking a sense of nostalgia while celebrating the modern world in all its glory.

Artist Bio

Kirsty thanks her Australian country upbringing and her close relationships with her mum and two sisters who have all studied Architecture for the whimsical and often naive urban subject matter that now dominates her work.
“My work is inspired by the beautiful or unique architecture of a home; the paradise of family. I love colour and am always trying to express a sense of joy. I feel that artists David Hockney, Reg Mombassa and Nick Olsen are my muse when it comes to influencers.

“After becoming a teacher and spending decades of my life teaching drama, art and working with children which I love I have finally decided to give my one art practice ago. Having painted as a hobby my whole life I felt it time and had a burning desire to make art my full time gig.

With ‘finding my way’ an art community on the central coast I am finally on my way to making that dream a reality.
