Artist Bio

Svetlana Prokhorova is a Brisbane-based artist whose practice is deeply rooted in the legacy of the Avant-garde and Russian Constructivism. Born in the USSR, Svetlana began her artistic education in a traditional academic-style art school. After a long hiatus in her creative journey, she reignited her passion for art upon immigrating to Australia, dedicating this new chapter of her life to the study of art history and contemporary practice.
Svetlana holds a Master of Fine Art from the National Art School in Sydney (2021), where she majored in Printmaking. Her work examines the historical trajectory of Avant-garde art, exploring its evolution from a declaration of freedom and progress to a tool of oppression, and its subsequent revival as a contemporary aesthetic in graphic design and urban art.
Her art is informed by personal experiences with Soviet symbolism and draws on the visual language of Cubism, Constructivism, and Geometric Abstraction. She finds inspiration in the works of Braque, Picasso, Kandinsky, Malevich, and Rodchenko, integrating their bold and innovative approaches into her practice. As a contemporary artist, Svetlana utilizes the visual language of Avant-garde art—minimal abstract forms and symbolic use of colour—to convey complex ideas and emotions in an accessible manner. Her works often reflects themes of individuality, societal influence, and the interplay between personal identity and urban environments.
Svetlana has exhibited widely in Australia, participating in group exhibitions, art fairs, and solo shows. She is a finalist in several national art prizes, further solidifying her reputation as an emerging force in contemporary art.
