HORIZON | Tidal

Tidal is part of the Horizon collection, exploring the meeting point between colour, light and form.

Rooted in the experience of matrescence, the series reflects the layering of identity through change: what remains visible, what becomes obscured, and what emerges differently depending on where we stand.

Two individually formed sheets of acrylic overlap within the work. A translucent aqua layer allows light to travel through and cast shifting pools of colour, while the metallic surface above it creates depth, reflection and a stronger sculptural presence. As the surrounding light changes, the piece moves between opacity and transparency, revealing new shapes, shadows and tonal variations.

Each layer begins as a flat sheet of acrylic before being individually heated, shaped and assembled by hand. No two forms, folds or reflections can be repeated.

Layered yet weightless, Tidal brings colour and movement into an interior while continually changing in response to its surroundings.

Laura Zajac is a Melbourne-based contemporary artist whose practice spans painting and sculptural wall works.

Originally trained in traditional art, Laura spent years working in portraiture and realism before moving towards abstraction. Her current practice explores movement, transformation and the tension between opposing states: chaos and calm, strength and fragility, control and surrender.

Rooted in her experience of matrescence -the profound physical and psychological transformation of becoming a mothe - Laura's work considers what happens when identity is stretched, reshaped and reconstructed. Her sculptural works echo this process physically: rigid materials are heated, softened and formed by hand into fluid, dimensional shapes.

Colour, reflection and movement are central to her work. From highly saturated colour to monochrome and reflective metallic surfaces, each piece responds to its surroundings, changing with the light, viewpoint and space it inhabits.

While the work begins from a deeply personal experience of transformation, Laura deliberately leaves space for individual interpretation. The forms can speak to change in all its forms: tension and release, disruption and stillness, or simply the beauty of something becoming different from what it once was.
