Artwork Description

Patchwork picnic weaves a story of contrasts, connections, and discovery. Fragmented geometric shapes stretch across the canvas, each filled with intricate patterns and organic textures that evoke natural elements of stones and fossils. The bold lines dividing the sections symbolise the compartments of life—structured and deliberate—while the soft, fluid forms within them represent the raw, unfiltered moments that shape who we are.
This piece invites viewers to consider how the fragmented aspects of their own lives come together to form a cohesive, beautiful whole. With its vibrant colours and dynamic composition, it serves as both a striking focal point and a gentle reminder that harmony can emerge from even the most unexpected contrasts.
Patchwork picnic has a vibrant and modern aesthetic that can elevate a room in several ways:
• Dynamic energy: the bold geometric segmentation combined with organic, fluid textures create visual interest and movement, adding a lively and engaging focal point to the space.
• Colour contrast: the interplay of vibrant pinks, earthy greens, and neutral cream balances warmth and calmness, making it versatile for different interior palettes. It could bring energy to a neutral-toned room or act as a harmonious counterpoint in a colourful space.
• Contemporary feel: the abstract design and mix of patterns lend a sophisticated, modern vibe, making it perfect for uplifting minimalist or eclectic interiors.
• Conversation starter: its intricate details and interplay of structure and organic shapes naturally draw attention, offering depth and interest that can spark curiosity and dialogue.

Artist Bio

laura is a self-taught abstract artist whose work is shaped by the experience of relocation. after moving to Australia in 2011, she became aware of the absence of history and lived time that had shaped her earlier surroundings in europe. painting became a way to respond to this absence, allowing her to hold onto history through the work when it was no longer part of her surroundings.

working mainly at large scale, laura treats painting as both building and uncovering. her work explores the balance between control and chaos. strong forms and clear lines create structure, while layers of paint reveal changes, memories, and the passage of time. these layered surfaces act as a stand-in for history, slowing the viewer down and encouraging close attention.

process plays a central role in laura’s practice. she allows marks to remain rather than correcting them, leaving evidence of change and uncertainty. each painting shows traces of what has been added, removed, and reworked, reflecting the way memory shifts over time and distance.

laura’s preferred mediums are acrylic paint, spray paint, oil sticks, and pastels. she uses colour and texture intuitively, often working with intensity until the painting reaches a delicate balance. her work reflects themes of longing and reconstruction, carrying the emotional pull of places left behind.
