Artwork Description

This is a cropped image of a magnolia flower with a visitor, the bee. I love the abstract shapes that the flower petals create and the contrast between bright sun and shadow. The bee draws the eye and makes sense of what the viewer is actually looking at. I have used acrylic on linen, allowing the colour of the linen to show around the edge, grounding the subject in nature. This painting represents those moments we capture when we notice the detail of life as it surrounds us and take time to stop and 'smell the roses'.

Artist Bio

Originally from Melbourne, I now live in the Central West of NSW. I started my art education at TAFE NSW, making the most of opportunities to explore a variety of mediums and processes including drawing, printmaking and photography. Some of the highlights during this time include being a semi-finalist in the TAFE NSW ‘Revealed’ Arts and Design Prize 2001, as well as publication in the Sydney Morning Herald Metropolitan Weekend Edition February 2003. Whilst completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts, installation and painting took centre stage. I was then commissioned by the University of Western Sydney’s Office of Regional Development to create a mural in collaboration with another student. After a break from my artistic practice while raising my family I have recently picked up my brushes again to dive back in to my artistic practice. Initially using water based oils to create narrative works, I am now working with acrylics to create large format floral paintings. I love working with colour, often enlarging my photos of a flower or floral arrangement to create an almost abstract work with contrasting shapes and forms. I also enjoy experimenting with and creating still life with various items I have collected over the years, arranging them by colour, shape and size to create a unified and pleasing composition that speaks to the viewer. The possibilities are endless! I am inspired by nature, the landscape and everyday objects that take on new life when seen with the artists eye.
