Laughing kookaburras are such an iconic Australian bird but it was not until I started observing them in my own garden that I developed a real love and appreciation for them.
They have an intense gaze when scanning the ground for prey or, as I have chosen to draw here, keeping guard of their territory. Fiercely territorial, they protect their chosen area in family groups. Each bird is different, particularly the individual patterns on their faces. Using coloured pencils on watercolour paper, I take my time to focus on the details of their unique feather markings. Observing these individual characteristics allows me to tell them apart. Here I have drawn a brother and sister from the family group in my garden with the younger sister in front.
