This is one of the iconic views of New York, and before starting the painting I wondered if it needed doing it again. However, I realised that by using black-and-white and an impressionistic technique I could find a new way of portraying this scene – making the familiar unfamiliar, inviting the viewer to look again at something they think they know inside out.
