Artwork Description

Oil on canvas, stretched and ready to hang.

Signed on the front.

This painting is of a friend who is well known in our area, coming from a long line of horse owners and trainers. Her family own a magnificent large property in the high country running cattle and a Jackaroo /Jillaroo school which attracts adventurous people from all over the world. Here my subject is using natural horsemanship methods, otherwise known as 'horse whispering' to prepare her young filly for breaking in. Instead of training in a round yard as expected, she uses the natural environment (including inquisitive dogs!) as she says, "that's what the horse will have to put up with".

This painting was awarded the Packing Room Prize at 'Frost Over Barraba' in 2019.

I am a strong believer that we are influenced by our surroundings and with my work I like to portray beautiful scenes that uplift, but have a calming effect. Telling the stories I see around me gives others an insight into country life, and people interacting with animals somehow speaks to the soul.

An enigmatic portrait of a young woman incorporates a peachy pink palette together with floral imagery creating a beautifully feminine painting.A Merino ram is beautifully displayed on a pastel blue/lilac background. A flock of merino sheep, heavily laden with their beautiful wool, are waiting for their turn to be shorn in the sheep yards attached to the shearing shed at Poolbrook Station, Nullamanna NSW (near Inverell). The poised attitude of the head reminds me of the graceful silhouette of a Modigliani portrait with the colour and exotic nature of Gaugin's Tahiti paintings. The figure is painted in oils using alla prima (wet-on-wet) technique on a ground of pale blue and lilac acrylic wash. This artwork is my first experiment incorporating some fluorescent paint into a composition—here in the shape of a single stroke which balances the dark mass of the subject's hair.
