The poised attitude of the head reminds me of the graceful silhouette of a Modigliani portrait with the colour and exotic nature of Gaugin's Tahiti paintings. The figure is painted in oils using alla prima (wet-on-wet) technique on a ground of pale blue and lilac acrylic wash. This artwork is my first experiment incorporating some fluorescent paint into a composition—here in the shape of a single stroke which balances the dark mass of the subject's hair.
So much of my work is by commission, so I enjoy painting little portraits like these as a way of letting off steam and relaxing between orders. As always, the never ending desire to capture the flesh as if to touch it drives me onward. A moment of repose before focusing on another upcoming solo show in 2024.
