Agricultural shows are a great place to photograph animals when you live in the city. Walking through the large stables during the Sydney Royal Show, I was faced with some polocrosse players leading their mounts back to their stalls. They had just played a display match in the main arena, and I stayed watching as they methodically took the saddles off their beautiful, tired animals.
Having a keen interest in textiles and design, I am fascinated by utilitarian clothing and equipment, an element of this subject matter that was another attraction for me. From the leather saddles and bridles, to the way the pony's tails are braided and bound, their legs protected with strapping and rubber boots. This was a joy to paint. (Unframed)
