Lily Allwell is an abstract artist based in Sydney. She graduated from the National Art School with a Bachelor of Fine Art (Honours) in film photography. She recently returned to painting, feeling drawn to create atmospheric abstract effects.
Lily's works are inspired by natural landscapes and geological formations. Her paintings are expressive and flowing, featuring translucent layers, organic forms and intricate linear detail.
Creating her works, Lily combines intentional mark-making (using palette knives and paddles) with the element of chance to develop the composition. She uses low-viscosity acrylic paint mixtures which flow freely. She tilts or spins the canvas to spread, expand or radiate the initial composition.
For Lily, embracing the paint's fluidity is key to achieving a striking work. She intuitively guides the fluid paint, balancing control with chance, as well as pattern, colour, motion and space.
