Artwork Description

Subtle Beauty is an original watercolour painting. Roses are a challenge to portray, especially in watercolour. There is something so captivating about them, that they must be painted. I love Monet and can see why he loved his garden at Giverny and painted there. Monet said "I must have flowers, always, and always." I will definintely be painting more flowers and also using some of my sister in law's photos of the gardens at Giverny for inspiration. It's actually an interesting turn of events as I was never keen on flowers when I was younger. My mother was an avid gardener and I remember there being plants everywhere, including pot plants inside. There were some roses growing over an archway leading up to the front steps of the house. I walked under it every day, but didn't appreciate how beautiful it was at the time. My mother used to pick flowers and arrange them, so they would look beautiful. I don't have that finesse, I just plonk them in a vase. Even when I studied plant and wildlife illustration, I tended to concentrate more on wildlife. It's only been in the last decade that I've started to really appreciate the wonderful creation that flowers are.

So I'm now a lover of flowers and am really enjoying portraying them. Subtle Beauty is a delicately painted artwork that speaks of beauty, romance and femininity. It would look beautiful in a bedroom, living room or study.

The artwork was created using artist quality watercolour paints on acid free Saunders Waterford watercolour paper. The artwork is unframed. It will need to be framed behind a matt board and glass. It measures 29 cm square.

Artist Bio

I have lived in Newcastle NSW all my life and studied my art degree here. I love working with watercolour, ink, acrylics and textiles (particularly silk). I also enjoy using pastels, making small sculptures and manipulating paper to form weavings and more 3D pieces. My work ranges from semi abstract to realistic depending on how I conceptualise the idea at hand.
