Artwork Description

If you can cast a throw net to catch live bait, you’re skilled and will be popular with all the fishers. Even though the water around Derby is muddy (not dirty), it often looks blue at dusk because it reflects the soft light of the sky. Derby experiences some of the largest tides in the world, with tidal variations reaching up to 11.8 meters.

Originally from South Australia, Linda Wilson has been living in the Kimberley with her family since 2004, first in the East Kimberley for 6 years, and in the West Kimberley since 2011.

"Being an artist for me means taking the time to observe and appreciate my surroundings and the people & culture around me. I love to capture the essence of place and the happenings of ordinary life and interactions in this remote part of Australia."

Based in Derby on Nyikina/Warrwa land, Linda has received recognition including the Overall Winner of the Kimberley Art Prize 2024 and the Works on Paper Award 2023. She has had her first solo exhibition at the Redbill Studio Gallery in Broome in June 2026.
