Artwork Description

The Return explores the continuous movement of nature, where water, light and atmosphere transform from one state into another.
Through luminous layers of turquoise, emerald and deep blue, light filters through an ethereal atmosphere before dissolving into the restless movement of water below. Forms emerge and disappear, suggesting the delicate transition between rising mist, falling rain and flowing water.
Rather than capturing a single moment, the painting reflects on nature’s endless cycle of transformation, where nothing truly disappears but continually changes and returns.
The Return invites viewers to experience the quiet energy of renewal and the invisible connections that shape the natural world.

Artist Bio

Jules Than, born in 1981, currently lives and works on the Gold Coast, Australia. His passion for painting emerged in his early years. Alongside learning from various teachers, he has continuously pursued independent study, reflection, and exploration of the styles and techniques of the Old Masters. Through the ways they observed, interpreted, and recreated the world through colour, he found inspiration to gradually shape his own artistic voice.

Jules Than works primarily in oil on canvas, focusing on light, movement, and the subtle shifts in temperature and atmosphere within natural phenomena. His paintings combine the classical technique of layered oil painting with the experimental spirit of contemporary visual language, interweaving abstract elements with richly symbolic imagery. At the heart of his artistic practice lies a profound connection between humanity and nature, alongside reflections on the ever-changing future of humankind and the natural world.

Through painting, he seeks to preserve the fragile moments of transformation in all things to hold on to a fragment of the world as it changes, before it becomes something entirely different.

For a long time, he painted solely as a personal practice and had never introduced his work to the art market. This is the first time he has shared with the public the emotions, reflections, and experiences distilled through his painting. He hopes his works will open up a new shade through which viewers can feel, contemplate, and observe life.
