Artwork Description

This piece continues my grid series that started with ‘Chapters of Life’, inspired by the many moments of life.

I started with the idea of creating the depth and darkness at the centre, with a gradient towards the edges. The more I worked on this piece the more it felt musical and the colours stretching towards the outside reminded me of the visual of music represented digitally.

The colours represent the beautiful morning colours across the Bay that I see when I do my morning walks, particularly when the sunrise brings the stronger colours to life.

Each step builds the story and each square represents a new chapter of life. Rather than cover up or hide the flaws, I have highlighted them intentionally with gold detailing to show that when you step back and see the full journey of your life you will see that these are not flaws at all, but a cohesive, complex and unique picture to be celebrated.

This piece comes framed in sustainable Blackwood.

Artist Bio

Liz is an Australian artist based in Black Rock, Victoria, specialising in geometric abstract and mixed media, using acrylic and origami paper on canvas.

Deeply influenced by the remote natural landscape surrounding her childhood home in Northern Tasmania, Liz also studied the Japanese language as a child and draws on her passion for Japanese culture through inclusion of origami paper and gold leaf as a reference to Kintsugi (the art of repairing broken pottery).

Liz’s technique involves drafting then filling geometric angles, progressively creating a gradient of depth and movement. She uses painting as a form of meditative expression and seeks to create pieces that inspire calmness and evoke an appreciation for the beauty of nature.

“I love to consider how light reacts in different environments. The geometric angles are intended to convey the strength of the subject and my appreciation for simplification and structure.”
