Artwork Description

Painted as part of my time as Artist in Residence with Fairfield City Museum and Gallery, this portrait of a young woman depicts a solemn, yet bold character. In a pose reminiscent of Vermeer, I wanted to capture both the softness and vivacity of the sitter.

A blue background with a fragmented face in three-quarter profile. The eye is painted in detail while the rest of the face and hair is made up of abstract lines and gestures. Landscape of Australia framed in a blue arch. In the middle of the composition is a partially painted man who looks directly at the viewer. The background is predominantly red, which mimics the effect of disembowelment and flayed flesh.
