Protea - A Fragile Strength

This work captures the protea, a flower celebrated for its resilience and transformative power. Emerging from ancient landscapes, the protea is a living symbol of endurance and rebirth, able to thrive even after fire - a reminder that beauty is often born from challenge. In its layered petals, I see not only nature’s architecture of strength, but also the quiet poetry of renewal and the human spirit’s capacity to flourish against all odds.

The interplay of luminous reds, golds and greens reflects the vibrancy of growth, while the delicate textures in the background echo the unseen patterns of life that support transformation. The bloom itself leans forward, reaching toward light, embodying a movement that is both graceful and determined. It is this balance - between fragility and strength, stillness and vitality - that inspired me to paint the protea as a meditation on hope.

Through this piece, I invite the viewer to pause in that space of becoming, to see within the protea not just a flower but a mirror of resilience - an affirmation that renewal is always possible, and that even in stillness, life continues to sing.

I often hear that to create art is to know yourself more. Making art has a message that not all will see and hear, but which resonates powerfully with those who do. To paint what captures my attention whether it be how perfectly human-made objects exist with nature, the beauty of reflective light or the majesty and power of Mother Earth is to appreciate this life.

More recently I’ve painted memories from my life’s moments; snapshots of the obvious and others, not so. Let the story be told - not only mine but of those who are provoked to sense and remember their own special moments when engaging with my art.

With the use of brush, palette knife and other mark-making tools, I build multiple layers of paint in oils or acrylics. The application of different textures also help to reveal a side-story to the main and this is an area I take time to develop. The texture creates depth and interesting twists and turns to the theme of my paintings much like the different characters and themes of a novel.

Many styles and mediums are yet to be explored but I look forward to navigating my way through this experimentation.
