Artwork Description

This work "Shag" Lesley Ryan’s work is heavily influenced by her love of Japanese art, the simplicity of line, and the reduction of landscape to its basic form. Watercolour allows her to develop a visual language of mood and serenity. The free flowing movements in her images, leave the viewer the decisions, about where and when. While the work is executed in watercolours it is rarely touched by a brush. Her painting implements can be a fork, a feather or a plastic card.

Artist Bio

I am an artist from the North Coast of New South Wales. I gained teaching qualifications from the University of Wollongong and for many years I taught intellectually and physically disabled children. I won the Rockdale art award when I was 12‚ at the time I was being tutored by now well-known Australian artist Pamela Griffiths. I continued to study art on a part time basis at East Sydney Technical College and in the last few years I have been tutored by many artists such as David Fairburn‚ Rodney Black‚ Angus McDonald, and Tony Smibert.

I've recently refreshed my art qualifications by completing a Diploma of Art through London Art College., as well as a certificate of Botanical Art through Newcastle University

In 2018 I was a studio artist for the Ballina Shire council, and this concluded with a month long exhibition in the Northern Rivers Community Gallery.

I have been teaching private students for 14 years. I have taught and studied painting overseas and I travel and study at every opportunity.
I have exhibited widely and had several solo exhibitions and many joint exhibitions.

Over the last three years I've had three solo exhibitions and studied woodblock carving in Japan.
