Lucille van Ligten — Artist Profile
Lucille van Ligten is an Australian artist and arts educator whose practice centres on creativity as a form of wellbeing, connection, and emotional expression. Working primarily across painting and mixed media, her work reflects an appreciation for nature, wildlife, portraiture, and everyday moments of observation and calm.
Working under the name Lucy VanLigten, her artistic style combines traditional oil painting techniques with layered collage elements, text, and expressive visual storytelling. Her works often blend realistic representation with symbolic and contemporary imagery, incorporating references to art, social media, and the creative process itself. Rich colour palettes, layered textures, and intuitive composition contribute to an eclectic and maximalist aesthetic that is both personal and emotionally engaging.
With a strong love of portraits and people, van Ligten’s work frequently explores human connection, identity, memory, and emotional resilience. Alongside her studio practice, she teaches art classes that encourage creativity as a restorative and accessible experience, supporting confidence, mindfulness, and community connection through artmaking.
Her work was featured in the 2023 Recovered Futures Art Exhibition in Queensland, including the exhibited painting Kookaburra. Van Ligten was also a finalist in The Doyles Art Award, one of Australia’s respected representational art prizes, further recognising her contribution to contemporary Australian art practice.
