Artwork Description

Some days the light does something you can't plan for.

This one started as a memory, that moment when you're driving (or flying, or just standing still) and the whole Australian landscape unfolds like it's showing off. Flowing hills rolling out in every direction. That red dirt that somehow glows even under a soft sky. And then, right at the edge of it all, a glint of blue ocean, like the horizon winked at you.

I built this piece around a bold but neutral palette because I wanted the landscape to breathe first. All that warm, earthy calm. But then those punches of colour crash in, unapologetic, because let's be honest: nothing about this country is ever really neutral. There's always a surprise hiding in the quiet.

Artist Bio

Lucy creates abstract works that explore the dynamic relationships between movement, texture, and colour. Her medium of choice is acrylic paints on canvas, where she uses bold, bright colours and energetic strokes to convey a sense of movement through her paintings. Lucy uses built up paint to create texture, which shifts shadows throughout the day as the light changes, creating a constantly evolving experience for the viewer.
Drawing from her background as a maritime engineer, Lucy's understanding of hydrodynamics and weather systems deeply informs the fluidity and motion in her work. The ever-changing landscapes of Tasmania, particularly the mountainous terrain and patterns found when bushwalking, are also a significant source of inspiration for Lucy. These are reflected in the layers of her paintings, as she builds up many layers of paint to create a sense of motion and flow that invites the eye to move across the canvas.
