West Street Hall

I used to rent a house on West Street. The hall-stand belonged to the house and was frequently adorned with flowers. This was one of the many scenes the house offered up as inspiration. It was full of quiet wonders and I wanted to capture its ordinariness as well as its beauty.

The artwork was created by engraving the shapes and lines onto ply, before layering with watercolours.

Artwork is framed in a handmade Tasmanian Oak frame- the oak has been ebonised to achieve the dark colour while maintaining the wood grain.

Lucy Herd lives and works in Lismore in Northern NSW. She has always
loved to create and in 2013 completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts and
Education at Southern Cross University. She has since worked as a
teacher in High Schools. Although art has always been an integral part
of her life, in recent months, Lucy has begun to more seriously pursue a
sustained arts practice. Her practice revolves around a deep
appreciation for the exquisite and often overlooked beauty in the
simplest subject matter- a leaf, a flower, the relationship of objects in a
room. From a young age, she has been particularly captivated by
Australian flora and landscapes. In technique and style, a strong
influence on Lucy’s practice is Australian artist, Cressida Campbell who
displays a profound engagement with shape and line as she explores
beauty in the everyday.
