Artwork Description

This work will be on display at the Bluethumb Gallery in Richmond, Melbourne for the 2023 Bluethumb Art Prize Finalists Exhibition from October 11th to November 27th. Delivery of this work will take place following the 2023 Bluethumb Art Prize Awards Night on October 26th.

Lucy’s work explores the connection between women and their associated weaving craft, all interwoven into the fabric of civilization itself. The painting is a bright tribute to the women who worked in the shadow of historical events. It also inquires about a potential alternative narrative closer to the spirit of the delicate art of weaving itself in which nurturing would be predominantly valued.
The excess of tartan patterns in the painting emphasises the art of warp and weft in order to overwhelm the viewer with shapes and colours bursting to reveal the magnitude and beauty of the weaver’s sway.

Artist Bio

Lucy Lucy’s work moves between large-scale public murals, tribal ornaments, textiles and gallery work.
Her paintings capture the evolving folklore of the feminine, exploring the diversity and boundaries of heritage. Whether a sovereign queen, a mystic sorceress, a youthful muse, or a charismatic lady, all share in the art and privilege of being a woman. More recently, Lucy has been exploring the concepts of presence and perception through imaginary masks enfolding women portraits. The concealing veneers echo with the idea that rarely oneself is entirely present or true.
