Artwork Description

This still life is an exploration into the theme of social control and mental health. The twisted yellow caution tape represents an everyday form of social control that you may see on the street warning of danger; while the cactus represents our thoughts - prickly and potentially painful but contained by the blue planter pot.

Artist Bio

Luke Morgan is an artist and arts educator based in Western Australia. His work is mostly figurative in nature and encompasses a range of studio areas with a focus on oil painting, ceramic sculpture and relief printmaking. A reflection on the symbolism of journey and the significance of myth in the formation of identity, his practice is represented in compositions that comment on the uncertainty of 21st century life.

Recent work explores the concept of social control, using street signs as an external representation of the internal forms of control that we place upon ourselves. By combining portraiture, text and symbols of social control, themes of mental health and wellbeing are examined.
