Artwork Description

This artwork is inspired by an examination of mental health during the pandemic, the mask has become a symbol of this time. The directional patterns in the background are taken from road signage and tightly fill the background creating a somewhat claustrophobic feeling.

Artist Bio

Luke Morgan is an artist and arts educator based in Western Australia. His work is mostly figurative in nature and encompasses a range of studio areas with a focus on oil painting, ceramic sculpture and relief printmaking. A reflection on the symbolism of journey and the significance of myth in the formation of identity, his practice is represented in compositions that comment on the uncertainty of 21st century life.

Recent work explores the concept of social control, using street signs as an external representation of the internal forms of control that we place upon ourselves. By combining portraiture, text and symbols of social control, themes of mental health and wellbeing are examined.
