The subject of my painting is Carl Vine AO a pioneer composer and an academic who has made an incredible artistic musical contribution to Australia.
I had the opportunity to spend time with him and paint him to immortalize this extraordinary figure and all the work that he has done for the Australian arts.
A recurring characteristic in my portraits is unveiling something unseen beneath the surface, rather than just the physical appearance. This portrait captures both his sides, Carlโs public face, as a leader in his field, whilst hinting at a more intimate, delicate and sensitive side that shone through during all our meetings.
Observing the painting, the eye is drawn to the seemingly musical dialogue between the background and the negative space of the body, this is a clear reference to Carl's music compositions, where the ear is often drawn to silent intervals.
Like light, shade, colour, and form, also in music, the space is an element that can be integrated into the composition to a degree where space becomes the protagonist in the meaning of a work.
