Artwork Description

Standing barefoot, the connection to the earth is immediate. There is a specific kind of belonging found only under the canopy of the banksia, a feeling of finally being home.

The Long Exhale captures the precise moment the internal noise stopped. Immersed in her undeniable beauty, the light caught the grit and gold of the cones, and the lungs finally emptied. It is a work of total immersion.

Deep, shadowed blues provide the structural silence, while the vibrant yellows and ochres represent the spark of a new collection being born. This is not just a botanical study; it is a transcript of a breath released and a heart surrendered to the landscape.

The artwork is housed in a custom internal frame, hand painted in a deep midnight blue-black. This dark, structural border pulls the shadows from the canvas, making the vibrant ochres and gold of the banksia truly pop against the wall.

Designed for versatility, this collection can be hung in any orientation portrait or landscape, allowing the movement of the light and the "exhale" to shift with your space.

Artist Bio

Hey, I’m Maddie, an Australian artist painting my way through healing, one piece at a time.

That journey is what led me to create Surrender Heart to Art Studio, a space built from honesty, resilience, and the quiet courage it takes to start again.

I stumbled into painting by accident. I didn’t grow up knowing I’d be an artist. One day I sat down with a blank surface and a good friend, and for the first time in my life, everything went quiet. The noise in my head stopped. I had no technique or training, just a feeling I didn’t want to walk away from. Hours would disappear, and each piece became a little freer, a little braver.

Painting became how I survived things I didn’t have words for. Over time, it shifted from coping to grounding, from grounding to rebuilding. I’ve lived through trauma, addiction, and moments where I wasn’t protected when I should have been. Art became the place where all of that had somewhere to go.

Now it’s how I move through the world. I notice everything: the ocean changing, wildflowers growing like they don’t care who’s watching, the way a banksia tree can feel like home. Motherhood, sobriety, and nature shape my work and keep me steady.

My paintings aren’t about perfection. They’re about truth. I work instinctively, layer by layer, responding to whatever feels right. My pieces move between softness and intensity, just like life does.

Surrender Heart to Art is about letting go of control, releasing what no longer serves me, and turning what I’ve lived into something honest and beautiful.

Each piece is guided by feeling, memory, and the parts of my story that shaped me.

Each one holds something real.

I hope you find something in my work that speaks to you.
