Artwork Description

This painting is of Malu Kumpu, the big lake to the north east of Tjukurla. You seen that little creek with the salt water, that is the Malu Kumpu. It is s􀆟ll here. The tali (sandhills) are around the lake. There is always a little bit of water in the lake, even when it rains it is only full in that one spot.

Artist Bio

Hello, my name is Maimie Giles and I'm from Tjukurla. But I am really from Tjukurla. I was born at Tjukurla clinic in 2001. I started to paint when I was at school in Perth. I was watching my mum and my aunties paint at Tjukurla. Sometimes I paint landscape as I see it. I like working at the art centre and helping all the ladies - helping them to mix all the colours. Sometimes I use a technique that makes patterns within the landscape. Being a young artist makes you feel proud; I am so proud to show everyone my art works and it makes me so happy when I see my paintings. The stories of my paintings are about my country, my father's country. I paint the country at different times of the day; mostly at sunset when the colours are strong and change from blue to purple, pink and red. I like painting just like my grandmother. She used to paint when she was young.
