In the Dreamtime lore of my Mob, the Kurna tribe, the Willie Wagtail is revered as the Messenger of Death. Throughout my short life, as I faced the passing of loved ones, my grandmother, uncles, aunts, and most recently, my mother, the Willie Wagtail fulfilled his role, offering warnings that allowed me to prepare for each loss.
This painting captures his presence: standing alert upon a tree branch, his watchful gaze unwavering. Behind him, the sun shines down, illuminating the scene in the traditional Aboriginal dot art style, symbolizing the enduring connection between life, death, and the spirits that guide us.
It is a sorrowful day when I see this beautiful creature. My heart stops as his tail wags, a silent reminder of the losses I have endured. Yet, despite the grief he carries, I will always respect him—for he does not bring sorrow out of cruelty but out of duty, guiding me through moments of farewell.
