Robert Quigley - formerly a Detective Sergeant in the Victoria Police Major Crime Squad – was in charge of the investigation into the theft of Picasso’s Weeping Woman (1937) from the National Gallery of Victoria in 1986. Although the case was never solved, the painting was recovered from a luggage locker at Spencer Street Station, Melbourne a few weeks later.
The 35th anniversary of the case in 2021 seemed a timely occasion to celebrate my husband’s service to the National Gallery of Victoria and the Australian art community. The case is the subject of a forthcoming 4 part series 'Framed' available on SBS on Demand from December 26, 2021.
