Drifting by Marijke Lambregtse is a powerful, thick layered colorful large artwork. Started in Bali and finished when back home in Brisbane. I do love this painting a lot especially because of the layering and collage of old stamps, letters and parts of this poem ‘Seaweed’ by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow I used in this work. The cultivation of seaweed on Lembongan island is still very strong and a great source of income for the local population especially when things like COVID happen and there are no tourists so at least they can go back to what original their way of living was which is great. I loved the little boats and the coral (of which sadly is not much left) and sea animals we saw and especially the spectacular sunsets, so incredible. So this painting is all influenced by that. As usual in my latest works there is the little guardian you can find in the work who’s been protecting me while living in Bali.
