I am an emerging artist residing in Melbourne’s Western Suburbs. My main interest is in painting predominately natural landscapes. After seeing a Van Gogh exhibition held at the National Gallery of Victoria in 2017, I was inspired to start painting. Soon after, I decided to undertake regular formal lessons with a local established artist, lessons which I still undertake to this day.
I primarily paint predominately natural landscapes along the Maribyrnong River in Melbourne’s Western Suburbs. My work aims to capture the essence of the local landscapes that I paint. I am particularly drawn to trying to capture the effect of sunlight on these landscapes as well as the mood and atmosphere of these landscapes in low light conditions. I feel that there is a dearth of artwork depicting the local natural landscape along the Maribyrnong River. I have been inspired by artists such as Clarice Beckett, Claude Monet, and Vincent Van Gogh who painted the local landscapes where they lived. I have also painted still life and self-portraits.
I paint using oil paint and paint directly on solid wood-based substrates or on cotton canvas stretched over wood-based substrates. I normally work over a number of sessions while the paint is still wet or after allowing the previous layer to dry before resuming. I have also used glazing at times to either better portray sunlight hitting a landscape, capture colour being reflected onto objects by light, or to provide colour unity. I paint in my studio or at my art teacher’s studio. I paint using photographs I take myself as references. I have experienced painting in plein-air and hope to do more plein-air painting in future.
