A body of water is quite beautiful when there are lilies flowering, softly unfolding their white petals, opening their golden eyes to the sun, nestled beside their bright green discs. It's a cal and gentle scene, but in this painting, there is a little stuffed penguin bobbing about unexpectedly. It has slipped unnoticed into the water and is oddly out of place. It hints that perhaps something is not quite right, as unseen beneath him flow the undercurrents. Strong, swift and silent, represented in this piece by the crocodiles. They churn up the silt and muddy bottom, eventually drifting to the surface to breathe. How often have we felt the undercurrents? How often has a little fear tumbled carelessly into our thoughts, only to stir up latent and murky fears, causing them to float to the very top of our conscious thought? It's a common thing, as we 'put on a brave face' and go about our daily lives, happy and smiling like the lilies, while underneath we wade through a pastiche of past experiences, memories and relationships, trying to get a handle on them before they become our experience. This painting is a reminder that even in the most difficult of times there is beauty and in time we too, can blossom like the lily. The sides of the canvas are painted, its varnished and ready to hang.
