Maryellen is a full-time artist and visual storyteller best known for her playful and textured combination of abstract and realistic subject matter.
Living on Sydney's beautiful Northern Beaches, Maryellen draws inspiration from the Australian coastal landscape, often featuring native flora and fauna in her work.
"There is nothing so beautiful as the cerulean waves and golden sand that I have the privilege of visiting most days. I'm constantly inspired by the contrast between this wild, blue expanse and the prolific manmade structures on the Sydney shore. I think that's why I enjoy the playful harmony and dissonance between abstract and realistic subject matter on the canvas—to reflect this relationship between the wild and the built world."
When she's not creating artwork to adorn walls, Maryellen freelances from her home studio as a writer and graphic designer. With a bachelors degree in law and media and nearly a decade of experience in the media space, Maryellen often draws on her love of language and multimedia to express ideas in her work.
"I don't shy away from experimenting or using words and poetry to imbue by creative practice. I also really enjoy pairing original written pieces with the visual imagery I create."
When she's not creating artwork or designs for customers and clients, you'll find Maryellen creating original music with her guitar-playing husband Josh, harvesting vegetables from her garden, or out learning to surf at her local beach.
