Artwork Description

The young women are travelling around the country near Kaltukarjara (Docker River) with the older ladies. They are learning many things about where to collect special grasses and flowers and other types of bush tucker. This knowledge is recorded in the motifs and symbols which have been used in Western Desert visual culture for countless generations, and which the artists now deploy in the new medium of acrylic painting.

Artist Bio

Maureen is a young artist from Kaltukatjara (Docker River). She enjoys painting alongside her mother, Lilly, and sister, Karen. Maureen paints both the Seven Sisters (Kungkarangkalpa) Dreaming, which spans much of Australia, and the Two Sisters' (Kungka kutjara) Dreaming, which passes by close to Docker River. Maureen can often be seen painting with a brush in one hand, and her baby daughter in the other!
