The Footprints we Leave.
Reflecting on my upbringing as a Country kid my memories normally involve a tree. Either climbing one, swinging from one or observing the surrounding fauna in one.
My children’s future memories of their upbringing as city kids intrigues me. Will their fondest memories consist of building virtual farms in Minecraft or defeating opponents with splashes of paint in Splatoon? I hope not.
In an attempt to have a screen free day I dragged my family up kunanyi (adoringly known as The Mountain) adventuring to find Secret Falls.
Squatting down trying to avoid wet feet , I took a photo that I later painted. Upon completion of this painting I asked the children (young adults now) if they remembered this day and place. The resulting description from them told me the muddy footprints we made that day were imprinted not just on “The Mountain “ but in their memories.
