Artwork Description

'Tumbling Rocks' is an impression inspired by the Pilbura region of Western Australian - heat and rugged, brightly coloured rock formations.
I first took alcohol ink to create the bottom layer of the painting using the vivid colours in various shades of Pinata ink. I don't use brush work when I work with ink - rather I use controlled movement, such as: tilting the paper or using a blow dryer. It takes a lot of practise to manipulate the medium with confidence. Nevertheless, there's a fair amount of fun, accidental outcomes when using alcohol ink, too. When dry, I created the look of a rocky landscape by drawing informal lines, in black posca pen, to imply tumbling shapes - some solid and some whispy. The fluid, soft shaping of the ink is contrasted by the black outlines of the pen work. Along with the stunning colours, this piece makes a strong statement to draw the eye in any room.
Several coats of Krylon Karma spray has been used to set the ink. This work isn't framed as yet, but framing can be arranged by Bluethumb or myself on request. The styled photo scenes give you an idea of what the painting would look like framed and hung in your home.

Artist Bio

I majored in Art throughout my student life. However, I took education as a career pathway, working as a primary teacher and then, as an EAL teacher (often using art to develop language). During that time I married and had a family, but continued to sell my art work on a regular basis. Happily, I can now focus on art fulltime. I use several mediums - alcohol inks, pens, pencils, acrylic paint and mixed media. I don't digitally enhance my pieces - it's all handworked, so you'll see brush strokes, pencil work etc., but you'll know it's authentic. My tools include palette knives, brushes of varying textures, a hair dryer, dabbing rags etc. (yes, and very often, my fingers). The surfaces I use are: yupo paper, yupo boards, wood boards, canvas frames and drawing papers. Mixed media pieces have a list of materials used. My style is a merging of various contemporary techniques - learning by doing and observing, is my preference. I tend to lean towards an intuitive approach, too and I often don't know what I'm going to paint, till a piece takes form. I draw regularly to sharpen my technical skills and to balance my freer painting style. I take inspiration from travel, photography, memories, dreams and imagination. Art is a major part of my daily life - whether I'm observing patterns in nature, daydreaming about possibilities or actually making art and I have been showing and selling my work at local galleries since 2020. I hope you enjoy looking at my work, as much as I enjoyed creating it.
