Artwork Description

This A3 watercolour work draws on my collection of bird photographs and my original geometric designs on graph paper from one of my sketchbooks. Since photographing these birds I have always wanted to depict them together as if in conversation. The patterned ground is placed into the ‘scene’ instead of an expected environmental surface, such as grass, giving it a more interior feel, as though the birds are on a Persian carpet. This playful juxtaposition along with the cheeky seagull subjects could create a fun talking point in the home, whilst brightening up the room with the cheerful bright colours.
I have used mostly watercolours for the painting, but also ‘inktense’ watercolour pencil to add texture in the patterned ‘carpet’. In addition to the signature, a signed certificate of authenticity is included with the artwork when purchased.

Artist Bio

Hi, I'm Megan. I have been interested in art and textiles since I was a young child; always drawing, knitting, crocheting and sewing. I took this passion with me throughout my adult life too, accumulating skills, curiosity and understanding. I enjoy exploring different media and methods to achieve certain effects. I use pencil, pastel, charcoal, inks, markers, gouache, watercolour and collage for works on paper and quality acrylic paints for works on canvas. Since it became possible to work digitally I have enjoyed adding photography and digital techniques to the mix. Yarn and fabric have also been favourite means of expression for me, opening up a whole other dimension: creating works to be worn.

I was born and raised and still live in the Western suburbs of Melbourne. Over the years of working in the fashion industry, raising a family, teaching at a secondary level then embracing early retirement, I have created a lot of artworks which, along with recent works, are begging for a home of their own. I hope that my offerings will bring joy to the lives and colour to the homes of other people in Australia and beyond.

Much of my artwork draws inspiration from the natural world and my home environment in some way, with a strong nod to my Textile design background. Although I use an abundance of materials and methods, there are a few common threads to most of my artworks: a tendency toward colour and texture and a desire to express movement. Much of my imagery includes pattern and some of my work could be described as ‘quirky’. In the future I hope to have the chance to work on a large scale. Thanks for reading my bio :)
