Statue With Magpie

One of the aspects of Italy I found inspiring on a recent trip was the sculpture, particularly the old statues. I chose three from the Milan Duomo Cathedral Museum and interpreted them in a garden setting with birds. I decided to use charcoal to achieve a classic, old-world feel. This one was the third one of the series, and includes a magpie (a favourite in our family) and an evening sky. I like the contrast between the stillness of the statue and bird, and the feeling of movement portrayed through swirly lines in the background. I also like the strong cast shadows suggesting the moonlight coming from behind is bright, rather than dull and creepy. I believe that whilst removing the important element of Colour, these and other details give the viewer plenty to keep them engaged, and the black and white aesthetic would look good in any interior setting. Artwork comes with a signed certificate of authenticity.

Hi, I'm Megan. I have been interested in art and textiles since I was a young child; always drawing, knitting, crocheting and sewing. I took this passion with me throughout my adult life too, accumulating skills, curiosity and understanding. I enjoy exploring different media and methods to achieve certain effects. I use pencil, pastel, charcoal, inks, markers, gouache, watercolour and collage for works on paper and quality acrylic paints for works on canvas. Since it became possible to work digitally I have enjoyed adding photography and digital techniques to the mix. Yarn and fabric have also been favourite means of expression for me, opening up a whole other dimension: creating works to be worn.

I was born and raised and still live in the Western suburbs of Melbourne. Over the years of working in the fashion industry, raising a family, teaching at a secondary level then embracing early retirement, I have created a lot of artworks which, along with recent works, are begging for a home of their own. I hope that my offerings will bring joy to the lives and colour to the homes of other people in Australia and beyond.

Much of my artwork draws inspiration from the natural world and my home environment in some way, with a strong nod to my Textile design background. Although I use an abundance of materials and methods, there are a few common threads to most of my artworks: a tendency toward colour and texture and a desire to express movement. Much of my imagery includes pattern and some of my work could be described as ‘quirky’. In the future I hope to have the chance to work on a large scale. Thanks for reading my bio :)
