Artwork Description

A small but dense little artwork telling the story of one of life's great transitions towards New Life.

"...and so I return into myself, calling home the fragments of my being to Hold them Fast. It is enough, to hold myself close, in embrace, and remember who I am. For I am a seed, waiting to germinate after a long drought, into Life once more".

Collecting the elements of what makes a life and letting go of what no longer serves, this work speaks of the retreat within oneself as if within a cocoon. There are times in life when we need to rest a while and work out what is required to move to the next stage. Working with many pieces of cyanotypes, cut to shape, and exposure in the sunlight using turmeric and other chemical reactions for colour and effect. Once the collage is put together the work is finished by hand with additional illustration and painting.

Artist Bio

Mel Anderson is a visual artist working with multiple mediums to tell stories from the Heart. With a focus on process, her original 2 dimensional artworks are allegorical fables woven from emotional states of being. Using mixed media cyanotypes created from original illustrations, photography, found objects and paintings, each artwork harnesses the honesty of emotions as the raw material for Storytelling. The artworks are confessional in nature, exploring situations and feelings as a way to process and understand the world around us. Each artwork comes with a companion piece of writing sharing the story within the work from the artist's perspective. Told through metaphor and symbolism, Mel's arts practice is both introspective and deeply connected to a broader humanity we all share.

Combining local materials and storytelling to weave a narrative, Mel divides her time between teaching and creating. Her current body of work is an extension of photography into cyanotype printmaking and ceramic pieces and she is also working on a wide-ranging community ceramic and storytelling installation project.
