Salt Path
Inspired by a walking track leading to one of the Mornington Peninsula's most beautiful stretches of coastline, The Way Down captures the anticipation and quiet excitement of approaching the ocean.
This contemporary minimalist landscape distils the experience into its essential elements: the winding sandy pathway, coastal vegetation, expansive turquoise water and endless sky. Rather than depicting the location literally, the work explores the feeling of moving towards the sea—the moment before the landscape opens up and the horizon reveals itself.
Created using heavily textured layers of acrylic paint, the surface interacts with light throughout the day, adding depth, movement and character. The restrained palette of coastal blues, soft sand tones and deep green vegetation reflects the natural beauty of the Australian coastline while complementing modern, coastal and postmodern interiors.
Part of an ongoing body of work inspired by the Mornington Peninsula, this piece was influenced by the same local beach currently attracting national attention as the backdrop for the upcoming season of The Block.
