I love gum trees as a subject for painting β their twisted shapes are so sculptural and their bark has so many nuanced swirls of colour and pattern that you can be as literal or as abstract as you like with them. I like to play with the different effects that light has on their colours: the ordinary observer might think trees are just brown and green and grey, but they would be missing out on all the other beautiful hues and tones to be enjoyed.
