Artist Bio

Melissa's practise is based in Port Stephens in NSW, Australia. She has studied Fine Art in Newcastle following a career in Graphic Design, Architectural Drafting and running art workshops for children and the elderly.

Layering paint allows for depth, transparency and the harnessing of light. Melissa is guided by emotional response to colour and composition while allowing random experiments and the unexpected.

Inspiration comes by the earth connection and mark making by John Wolseley. The works of Richard Deibenkorn are admired for composition and Egon Scheile for expression.

"I am happiest when my hands are creating. Energy and intention are an important aspect of my practise and in the work I create. The impact on the viewer is always intended as positive and enriching.”

In addition to her painting, Melissa makes Sound Reduction Art. The noise in a 'reflectively-surfaced' room is made bearable by this product. Designed to assist in reducing noise bounce in cafes, waiting rooms or open plan homes, these are paintings and drawings on a fibrous surface. The materials used are of industrial standards and are rated to absorb around 85% (0.85 NCR) of the sound waves that hit the surface resulting in sound comfort for the room occupants.
