Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me , but do they? A saying thrown around the schoolyard when often bullied, was a defence mechanism that may or may not have worked. These days we know words can be very hurtful and a little ditty like this is not enough to protect from the pain of name calling. I came to do this work because, while collecting sticks and stones, which I love for their organic aesthetic and earthy colours, it reminded me of the saying, and how ineffective it really was. I guess I wanted to make a point of that and maybe to spark some thought in others.
