My work has been highly influenced by the world of commercial art and graphic design. This translates to my art in many ways. My still life paintings are careful composition full of allegories, which capture a moment in time where all represented items are meaningful beyond the composition.
"Nikes on a Wire" is one in a series of drawings that feature gold foil embellishments.
I've created a series of Chuck Taylor Converse shoes on a wire, but I wanted to create a version with a shoe that is more popular today... so I looked in my teenager's closet. Nike high tops are very popular and I couldn't resist the Dunks.
The urban myth of shoes hanging from a wire has several theories from being a place where you can buy drugs to a location where someone was killed, plus many more colourful theories. But the truth is, they were a "tag" by the youth of the day, saying "I was here" in the same way graffiti is used today.
