The subject of this painting is Australian actress and singer Natalie Bassingthwaite, but it is really about the universal theme of modern motherhood. I see working parents as everyday superheroes, defying the limitations of time and space to get everything done (for career, family, school, sport, homework, finance, housework and lastly... self). I have painted themes of everyday working mothers as Wonder Mothers. This is my latest adaptation in this theme.
Natalie is a busy working mother to two young Children. I can relate to Nat, being a busy working mother myself. This portrait of Nat, running out the door with the kids in tow, launching over the washing, in the classic superhero pose. She wears a Wonder Woman bodice, and her red hoodie is the modern day cape. The red boots over the blue jeans are her modern day super hero attire. The keyring features the term "Wonder Mother" in the Wonder Woman logo. Her daughter holds a super girl doll. Even the title reference Wonder Woman with the double WW in "Washing" and "Wait".
This painting was a finalist in the Portia Geach Memorial Prize, in the John Copes Portrait Prize receiving a Highly Commended award.
