This is one of my favourite vintage teacups. Filled with orange and yellow flowers which I grow specifically for painting in my garden. They also keep the chooks healthy. I use mirrors and colour to explore the theme of still life with a limited palette, but I'm looking for something more. It's difficult to articulate but it has something to do with the mood and the quality of the light. My paintings although very detailed are not really botanical illustrations as I am more concerned with the brush marks and the quality of paint than exact detail. Every moment of these little flower paintings is joyful but especially the last hour or so when I get to pop in all the small marks and pops of colour which make these works sing. If I had to choose one subject to paint for the rest of my life it would be these little nasturtiums.
My studio is in the middle of my home, We live by the forest, The forest is full of creatures and birds. The house is full of things, dust, art and sometimes creatures as well. My paintings evolve over many hours, sometimes months, building layer upon layer. For me this is the thing that is so wonderful about painting, it's slowness.
