Classically painted using layers of oil paint and medium to create a translucency usually found in the masters of the seventeenth century e.g. Caravaggio. The molding of the shapes is achieved by first painting and underpainting in, usually, in burnt umber and then, when dry, applying transparent layers of colour with re-establised highlights to create the illusion of depth. The end result is a very luscious effect.
